SECURITY COMMITTEE
The Security Committee met on 11 April 2005 at 600pm. Three residents and Walter Andres, Wackenhut Corporation were present. The first issue discussed was the PR regarding our security company. Mr. Andres listened to issues and will contact us with any recommendations.
The next issue discussed concerning solicitors. Channel 63 currently advises residents to contact Pointe Management regarding solicitors. This information needs to be changed to contact Wackenhut and the Sheriff’s Office.
Wackenhut station One phone number needs to be posted on Channel 63, newsletter and the website. (800) 929-4273, Station One is open 24 hours a day. Also, residents can phone in complaints after hours. Wackenhut has a shift supervisor roving our area that can respond for complaints. A question arose concerning calls for service. Agencies have a priority listing for calls for service. Any call that is in-progress takes priority over delayed calls for service. So, remember that waiting an hour for the Sheriff’s Office to respond for a non-violent delayed call is common.
Our reporting agencies are patrolling the park due recent complaints of partying. Any resident can contact the Sheriff or Wachenhut to anonymously report it. The park also needs to be cleared. Several trees have fallen in the SW corner and overgrowth needs to be cleared. The community does not need a brush fire in the park. The park needs another sign posting the hours and trespass warning at the Fox Hunt Trail pathway entrance.
Our community has many maintenance vehicles working within our community. All maintenance vehicles are required to display their company name and license number. Remember that our community is open; anyone can drive through pretending to be working and simply scouting out a target of opportunity.
Our community has a resident that has chosen to operate his vehicle over a sidewalk. This resident’s information will be forwarded to property management. Several of our residents and guests are failing to obey the posted speed limit and stop signs. Also, the loading/unloading of children from the school bus is being ignored. Enclosed are the state statues covering speed limit, stopped school bus, and the operating a motor vehicle.
316.189 Establishment of municipal and county speed zones.--
2) SPEED ON COUNTY ROADS.--The maximum speed on any county-maintained road is: (a) In any business or residence district, 30 miles per hour in the daytime or nighttime; provided that with respect to residence districts a county may set a maximum speed limit of 25 miles per hour after an investigation determines that such a limit is reasonable; and it shall not be necessary to conduct a separate investigation in each residence district.
316.172 Traffic to stop for school bus.--
(1)(a) Any person using, operating, or driving a vehicle on or over the roads or highways of this state shall, upon approaching any school bus which displays a stop signal, bring such vehicle to a full stop while the bus is stopped, and the vehicle shall not pass the school bus until the signal has been withdrawn. A person who violates this section commits a moving violation, punishable as provided in chapter 318.
(b) Any person using, operating, or driving a vehicle that passes a school bus on the side that children enter and exit when the school bus displays a stop signal commits a moving violation, punishable as provided in chapter 318, and is subject to a mandatory hearing under the provisions of s. 318.19.
316.1995 Driving upon sidewalk or bicycle path.--No person shall drive any vehicle other than by human power upon a bicycle path, sidewalk, or sidewalk area, except upon a permanent or duly authorized temporary driveway. A violation of this section is a non-criminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.
The meeting was adjourned at 720 pm.
Finally, residents need to be warned of the current Internet scams.
Phishing is the practice of scamsters setting up bogus Web sites that look like those of legit retailers in an attempt to trick unwary consumers into giving up their credit card numbers. Phishers typically spam out e-mails with spoofed addresses that seem to come from respected merchants. Online auctioneer eBay, it's person-to-person payments subsidiary PayPal, electronic retailer Best Buy, and Microsoft are among the most common commercial victims.
The e-mail subject headers warn the recipient of a problem with their account or, in the case of Microsoft, the need to install still another patch. In the e-mail is either a form to fill out with personal information, or a link to the crooks' phony site.
"Spoofing," or "phishing," frauds attempt to make Internet users believe that they are receiving e-mail from a specific, trusted source, or that they are securely connected to a trusted web site, when that is not the case. Spoofing is generally used as a means to convince individuals to provide personal or financial information that enables the perpetrators to commit credit card/bank fraud or other forms of identity theft. Spoofing also often involves trademark and other intellectual property violations.
In "E-mail spoofing" the header of an e-mail appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. Spam distributors and criminals often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open and possibly even respond to their solicitations.
"IP Spoofing" is a technique used to gain unauthorized access to computers, whereby the intruder sends a message to a computer with an IP address indicating that the message is coming from a trusted port.
"Link alteration" involves altering the return address in a web page sent to a consumer to make it go to the hacker's site rather than the legitimate site. This is accomplished by adding the hacker's address before the actual address in any e-mail, or page that has a request going back to the original site.
If an individual unsuspectingly receives a spoofed e-mail requesting him/her to "click here to update" their account information, and then are redirected to a site that looks exactly like their Internet service provider, or a commercial site like EBay or PayPal, there is an increasing chance that the individual will follow through in submitting their personal and/or credit information.
