Park CommitteeHere are the (short form) minutes from last
Saturday's meeting concerning Pheasant Walk Park and (in particular) the entrance from Fox Hunt.
- Never call an outdoor meeting when it is likely that a downpour may
happen all weekend long. (Just Kidding!)- We reviewed what has been accomplished recently concerning the park
and Classy Cut's obligation to the upkeep of the park. We walked the park
area and it was discussed that there has been much progress in the initial
clearing and "cutting back" of "aggressive" plant life. It is obvious
that there has been progress in the actual park area and we now need to
decide what will replace these "cleared" areas where the excessive
growth has been removed.- Current ideas for the "cleared" areas mentioned above include a
butterfly park in a small area sponsored by a Boy Scouts Eagle Scout
project. The cost is low, the labor is free, due to the scout's
obligation to fulfill the badge requirements, and the net effect is a nice part of
the park that is currently mulch and not much else. We would need to
consider the possible disruption by unruly kids.- We made our way through to the "back" entrance of the park, accessed
by Fox Hunt. After much discussion (under cover of umbrella) we decided
the following as a "go forward" plan:
- We price out and then purchase railroad ties and fine gravel (fine
enough to move a stroller over; much like that used in many nature park
trails) and then begin work on clearing and installation of an
"entrance" to the park on the Fox Hunt side. Final design and path to be quickly decide and approved by those of the core involved. Initial work on the clearing and planning to begin this Saturday, 04/03/03. We meet at the Fox Hunt entrance at 10:00am.- We agreed that Tanya needs to assist in the marking of any
"friendly" tree on the trail will eventually lead to the park itself (and we don't want to remove) from the Fox Hunt side. We do not want to take out good, native trees unless they are dead or severely diseased. We do not want to interrupt any area that may still be host to the turtles that have made this place a home.- We almost agreed that the area at the front of the Fox Hunt entrance
should remain grass and we should pipe in water from the actual park
site. This was an area where there is much debate over the existence of grass or newly installed gravel. (Honestly, grass is probable the best option at lowest cost and maintenance for now; but this is just an author's injection as I am writing these minutes) :)- We agree that the initial entrance from the Fox Hunt side should be
railroad ties and gravel but as it enters the actual trail to the park,
it should become fine gravel path with "split" fencing guiding the way.
Split fencing much as you remember from an old farm with wooden posts tied together each 12 foot section with two horizontal long railings. I think it would look great and it would inhibit kids and adults alike from
straying from the path.O.K., Bottom Line? This is moving forward. I urge any and all that
want to help (or have an opinion) to show up this Saturday at 10:00am or
e-mail me or Tanya. It's a community event. I was so pleased to see the
folks who showed up on Saturday with umbrellas in hand and an a positive
attitude. It made my day!
